Mbappe was hospitalised with an acute case of gastroenteritis
Kylian Mbappe is unlikely to feature for Real Madrid when they face Pachuca in the Club World Cup on Sunday.
The Frenchman missed his side’s tournament opener and it was then revealed he had been hospitalised with an "acute case of gastroenteritis".
He has since returned to Real’s training base in Palm Beach, with a statement from the club stating: “Kylian Mbappe was discharged from the hospital this afternoon and has returned to the training camp.
“Mbappe will continue receiving specific medical treatment and will gradually return to team activity.”
It would be a surprise if Mbappe was rushed back into action and he looks set to be left out when Xabi Alonso’s side take on Mexican opposition in their second match of the Club World Cup.
Gonzalo Garcia led the line for Real against Al-Hilal in Mbappe’s absence and scored his side’s only goal of the game, which should be enough for him to keep his place.
Antonio Rudiger could return to the squad in a major boost for Alonso, though it remains to be seen if he is yet ready to start.
The centre-back underwent knee surgery at the end of April and missed the final weeks of the season, but he has now returned to training and is in contention.
Trent Alexander-Arnold is expected to continue at right-back despite a tough debut, while Dean Huijsen should continue in the heart of defence.
Jude Bellingham will undergo shoulder surgery after this tournament but remains available for now, and the pace out wide will once again come from the likes of Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo.
Predicted Real Madrid XI: Courtois; Alexander-Arnold, Asencio, Huijsen, Garcia, Valverde, Tchouameni, Bellingham, Rodrygo, Garcia, Vinicius
Injured: Alaba, Militao, Camavinga, Mendy, Carvajal, Endrick
Doubts: Rudiger, Mbappe
Time and date: 8pm BST, Sunday June 22, 2025
Venue: Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte
TV channel: The match will be shown in the UK on DAZN
