According to a recent report from AS, Real Madrid are keeping a close eye on Eder Militao’s fitness and form before making a final decision on whether to pursue a new centre-back in the transfer market.
While the club appears well-stocked in defence on paper, the long-term plans tell a more complicated story.
Currently, Real Madrid have five centre-backs, namely, Antonio Rudiger, David Alaba, Dean Huijsen, Raul Asencio, and Eder Militao.
But internally, the club sees only Huijsen, Asencio, and Militao as part of the future project. Rudiger and Alaba, despite their experience, are not considered long-term options. That puts even more weight on Militao’s shoulders.
The Brazilian defender’s situation is delicate. After suffering two ACL injuries, questions remain about how well he can return to his previous form.
Although he made a surprising early recovery, appearing in the Club World Cup and featuring for 22 minutes against PSG, Real Madrid want to see how he performs in competitive fixtures throughout August before drawing conclusions.

His performance during this critical window will heavily influence whether the club will make a move for another central defender.
Currently, Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konate is seen as the top candidate, but the English club’s high asking price is a hurdle.
Interestingly, that could change depending on how urgent Real Madrid’s need becomes and whether Liverpool adjust their demands later in the window.
For now, Real Madrid are trusting in their options, but they remain alert. If Militao shows signs that he is still not at the required level after back-to-back injuries, the club could act quickly.
With only one year left on Konate’s contract, there is potential for movement if the situation becomes more favourable.
For now, Militao holds the key to whether or not Los Blancos make a significant defensive signing this summer.
