A member of the defensive ranks at La Liga giants Real Madrid was on Thursday evening dealt something of a blow.
The player in question? Raúl Asencio.
Stopper Asencio is for his part of course fresh off a first-ever call-up to the Spanish senior squad.
Rewarded for his stellar recent form whilst lining out for Real Madrid, the 22-year-old put himself in contention to feature in La Roja’s Nations League double-header with The Netherlands.
In turn, it no doubt came as a blow for Asencio on Thursday evening, when word was forthcoming that he had been completely omitted from his country’s squad.
With Luis de la Fuente having called up 23 players, the trio of Ferran Torres (injured), Yeremy Pino and Asencio were those forced to sit out.
It now remains to be seen if the Real Madrid talent is afforded a matchday call for this weekend’s 2nd leg meeting with The Netherlands.
