Real Madrid star Luka Modrić secured for himself a fresh piece of club history on Saturday night.

This came owing to his appearance versus Atlético.

Real were of course back in action yesterday evening, welcoming city rivals Atléti to the Santiago Bernabéu for the latest edition of the Madrid Derby.

When all was said and done, the two sides were forced to settle for a share of the spoils, owing to a 1-1 draw.

The aforementioned Luka Modrić, for his part, was introduced to proceedings off the bench during the 2nd-half, with the hosts in search of an all-important 2nd goal.

And, in the process, the Croatian veteran made history.

As revealed by statistician Pedro Martin, Modrić has overtaken former teammate Karim Benzema as the player with the most appearances in the Madrid Derby.

The 39-year-old has now taken to the pitch against Atlético on 40 occasions, all competitions considered.
