Raul Asencio’s FIFA Club World Cup in the United States has been a disaster from the get-go and both his games for Real Madrid in the tournament have involved major errors.

While he gave away a match-defining penalty in the first game that helped Al-Hilal salvage a point, he was sent off for an unnecessary last-man tackle against Pachuca and left the team with ten men for over 80 minutes.

Acknowledging his mistakes, he even took to his social media earlier this week and admitted that he was responsible for the mistakes committed and that he would improve moving forward.

Real Madrid’s trust

As relayed in a recent report by AS, there is an internal feeling in the Real Madrid camp that the player has been hard-done in recent weeks and that it proves nothing about his level.

In fact, there is a serious effort to spread positivity around his situation as they look back on how Asencio came out of nothing and reinforced the centre-back position for Real Madrid last season against all odds.

“He has given and will give us a lot [in the future],” is the internal feeling in the Real Madrid camp as they maintain gratitude for the player’s contributions in recent times.

Asencio has been comforted by his teammates in recent days, both publicly and behind the scenes and it is clear that he will return stronger than ever before.

With him missing the next game through suspension, however, he may lose out on his regular starting spot with Antonio Rudiger set to be Dean Huijsen’s regular partner in defence.

The German-Spanish combination will likely start tonight and serve as Alonso’s preferred combination at the back.

Asencio, meanwhile, must get used to being an important player off the bench as he continues his growth and improvement on crucial fronts including his impulsive decisions and rashness on the field.
