For a long time, the Real Madrid administration believed that the only gap in their squad was in the full-back position.

Signing Alphonso Davies and Trent Alexander-Arnold, thus, was largely seen to be sufficient to return the team to the highest level.

The ongoing season, however, has highlighted Los Blancos’ need for new signings in multiple departments.

As relayed by AS in a recent update, the game against Arsenal in particular highlighted the departments where Real Madrid must return to the market for big signings but the administration are still hesitant to spend.

Positions of interest

Trent Alexander-Arnold will undoubtedly be Real Madrid’s top transfer target for the summer, especially given that he will be a free agent and that the right-back position is in dire need of a long-term fix.

It is critical, however, that Florentino Perez and Co. do not continue to ignore the other positions that require reinforcement just like they did last summer.

For starters, Real Madrid require a new young and dynamic centre-back. Dean Huijsen has been identified as a suitable target with a desirable profile but the player will cost €60 million, something whose feasibility Los Blancos are still calculating.

The midfield is the department that needs urgent fixing with the club lacking a Toni Kroos type controller and distributor.

Martin Zubimendi is a prime target on that front but brings the same price tag and economic concerns as Huijsen. Florian Wirtz is an even more elusive dream for his signing will cost close to €150 million.

Real Madrid’s economic situation is indeed positive, but the management’s concerns stem from the fact that there are not too many players who are on their way out of the club.

Luka Modric, Lucas Vazquez and Jesus Vallejo, for instance, are the only three players whose contracts with the club end this summer.
