Real Madrid have reached an agreement with Benfica to sign promising Spanish left-back Alvaro Carreras in a deal worth €50 million, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The two clubs had been in contact since the end of the European season, but the Portuguese outfit wanted to take the player to the Club World Cup.

The Spaniard is expected to sign a five-year contract and will become Madrid’s third signing of the summer after Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dean Huijsen.

He began his football journey in Madrid’s youth academy, joining at the age of 14. After progressing through the ranks, he joined Manchester United in 2020.

However, after failing to make a senior appearance for United, he joined Benfica on loan before making the move permanent.

He quickly established himself as one of Europe’s most exciting young left-backs.

During the 2024/25 season, he bagged four goals and four assists in 52 appearances across all competitions, showcasing his quality at both ends of the pitch.

Madrid’s left-back position has been a point of concern, with Ferland Mendy struggling with recurring injuries and Fran Garcia yet to consistently deliver at the highest level.

Carreras offers a versatile solution, capable of playing as a traditional left-back or as a wing-back in a three-at-the-back system, providing tactical flexibility for manager Xabi Alonso.
