Kylian Mbappé has had a challenging start to his time at Real Madrid after joining the club on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain this summer. As a result, one pundit believes that the Spanish side should’ve pursued a player who can play the No. 9 position.
The Victor Osimhen saga dominated the summer transfer window, with Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain reportedly interested in the Nigerian striker. Now back in top form reminiscent of his standout 2022-23 season, Osimhen could attract even more attention when his loan spell at Napoli ends in 2025.
Osimhen joined Galatasaray on loan after a permanent transfer from Napoli didn’t materialize. The 25-year-old has been in excellent form this season, with eight goals and four assists in just nine appearances for the Turkish club.

On the latest episode of The Lowdown podcast, Sky Sports’ Dougie Critchley noted that the Spanish side should’ve pursued a player such as Osimhen, who can play the No. 9 role that they need.
“A player that [Real Madrid] could have potentially signed, and either on the short term or long term, who is nine days younger than Mbappé and has experience solely playing as a No. 9, who is available this summer, is Victor Osimhen,” Critchley said.
“Osimhen was so clearly available, particularly… It was at the end of the window. They’d already signed Endrick, they’d already signed Mbappé. The timeline wouldn’t have worked out…
“I’m surprised that more teams didn’t make more of an effort to sign Victor Osimhen. He’s already started to really click at Galatasaray. Amazing performance against Spurs in the Europa League, and he was so gettable. I think he’s obviously not on the level of Mbappé as a player, but is he a better [No. 9] than Mbappé? Possibly.”
