Legendary winger Luis Figo has shared his thoughts on Real Madrid’s summer business, stressing that while the club made important signings, Luka Modric’s departure could still leave a major void in the team.

Speaking to Betfair, the Portuguese icon highlighted that Madrid have once again strengthened with the clear objective of returning to the top both in Spain and Europe.

“I think the club, as always in these cases, after a year like last year, always tries to strengthen itself to become more solid and to improve the squad in the positions it believes it needs.

“We also have to see how Modric’s departure affects this, as he has been very important in recent years,” Figo explained.

Madrid and Barça still favourites for the title

The 2024/25 season ended with Real Madrid falling short in La Liga, where Barcelona edged them in the title race. According to Figo, that will not change the hunger inside the squad.

“I don’t think the players lacked hunger. When you play for Madrid, you have to be aware that you’re competing to try to win everything, and that you have to have that motivation, passion, and work to win titles and be better than the rest,” he said.

When asked about the upcoming battle for La Liga, Figo was clear that the traditional giants remain the strongest sides.

“The fight for La Liga will be between Madrid and Barcelona, the theoretically strongest teams, with the best players and squad, and historically the most victories. For all these reasons, they are the favourites,” he added.

On the subject of leadership within Madrid, the former Ballon d’Or winner did not pick between the two stars.

“Vinicius or Mbappe? Both. In such a long season, you have to be consistent. A single player can’t always be at the same level for eleven months,” he stressed.

Figo also gave his opinion on some of the new signings in Spain. “I like Alexander-Arnold and Rashford,” he admitted.

He further predicted that the MVP award will likely go to one of the most reliable stars in Spanish football. “It could be Raphinha, Vinicius, or Mbappe from Real Madrid, or Julián Alvarez from Atleti,” he stated.
