The brass at La Liga giants Real Madrid have identified a backup market option, in the case of being unable to land Benfica star Álvaro Carreras over the weeks ahead.

That’s according to club insiders Mario Cortegana and Guillermo Rai of The Athletic, who point towards Alejandro Grimaldo as the player in question.

Grimaldo for his part spent the last couple of seasons plying his trade under the watch of incoming Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso, at Bayer Leverkusen.

And to say that the former Barcelona youngster has gone on to impress at the BayArena would be something of an understatement.

All told, from his berth at left-wing-back, since the beginning of the 2023/24 campaign, Grimaldo has racked up 16 goals and a whopping 33 assists.

And such excellence, evidently, has not gone unnoticed at the aforementioned Real Madrid.

As per a report from The Athletic, having encountered complications in their efforts to sign Álvaro Carreras from Benfica:

‘They are considering other alternatives such as Bayer Leverkusen’s Alejandro Grimaldo.’
