While Real Madrid are fully focused on the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, the club also needs to quietly start working behind the scenes.
One of the most pressing internal issues is the contract situation of four veteran players whose deals expire in 2026, namely, Dani Carvajal, Thibaut Courtois, Antonio Rudiger, and David Alaba.
All four have had one unfortunate thing in common in recent seasons, which is the injury setbacks. They are all over 30 now, and while that does not immediately signal the end, recovery and consistency become harder to manage.
The club is already looking at possible replacements, and this could close the door on extensions for some of them.
However, the situations of these players differ in terms of form, value to the team, and what the club expects from them in the future.
Among the four, Carvajal appears to have the strongest case for staying beyond 2026. Despite being injured throughout the season, he remains one of the best right-backs in the world.

More than just a footballer, he remains a leader both on and off the pitch, a vital presence in the dressing room.
Courtois is another player expected to continue. Although this season has been disrupted by more injuries than usual, there is no doubt about his quality.
Widely regarded as one of the top goalkeepers in the world, Courtois still has the club’s full trust, and if he returns to fitness, his place is secure.
Rudiger’s future, however, is less certain. The club has already started reinforcing the centre-back position with younger options, and although the German has had a solid campaign, there is a chance Madrid might not renew his contract.
Although there are talks of a renewal, a free exit could be on the table if no agreement is reached.
Alaba faces the biggest challenge. His recurring injuries and declining form have raised serious doubts within the club.
While his ability to play out from the back is unmatched, his defensive solidity has dropped, and it is unclear if he can bounce back. Of all four, Alaba is currently the least likely to earn an extension.
