Real Madrid have identified the right-back position as an area they need to strengthen in, and were linked with Trent Alexander-Arnold as early as March. The 25-year-old Liverpool star is looking even more attractive after veteran Dani Carvajal went down with a serious knee injury earlier this month.

According to Relevo, Los Blancos are continuing to work on a deal for Alexander-Arnold, however suggestions that they may look to bring him in this January are likely to be wide of the mark. Despite Carvajal’s injury, they still intend to sign him for free in July of 2025, after his contract expires.

While a January move could not be ruled out, it would have to be for a reasonable fee, and he can sign a contract with the European champions in less than three months time. Liverpool no doubt will do all they can to pen a new deal with the England international.

Some may be questioning their strategy, with just Lucas Vazquez as a natural option to fill in for Carvajal, but either Liverpool are unlikely to want to allow Alexander-Arnold out the door midseason. Neither is it likely to be a particularly attractive idea for the player, who will surely want to leave his boyhood club on as good terms as is possible. For Los Blancos, they have shown they will not be held to ransom over players out of contract in the near future.
