The ongoing 2023/24 campaign in Europe has been all about broken records, with Bayer Leverkusen recently becoming the team with the longest unbeaten run in all competitions since the dawn of the 21st century.

Following a win over Real Sociedad, Real Madrid, too, appear to be on the verge of breaking their own record of unbeaten runs in La Liga.

Real Madrid closing in on club record

Real Madrid’s current unbeaten run in La Liga sits at 27 games, putting them within touching distance of the club record. The record of 30 games, set in the 1988/89 season, feels tantalizingly close.

This dominant spell echoes the legendary run of the late 80s, where a five-year league title reign was secured. Back then, the unbeaten streak stretched from matchday 36 of the 1987/88 season to matchday 28 of the following year.

But after the narrow win over Real Sociedad, Real Madrid have now extended their current unbeaten run to 27 matches, meaning the club can match its own record if they go unbeaten in the next three matches.

Real Madrid are set to take on Cadiz, Granada and Alaves in their next three matches, with all three teams languishing in the second half of the league table.

Should Los Blancos avoid defeat in these three games, they will have the chance to break their own record against Villarreal on May 19.

However, between now and then, Real Madrid are slated to take on Bayern Munich in the Champions League semifinals and one would expect the club to prioritise the UCL, knowing the league title has already been sealed.

Therefore, breaking the record of 30-match unbeaten record could be a lot trickier than it seems, as coach Carlo Ancelotti looks to prioritise the Champions League.
