Raphaël Varane return to RC Lens unlikely | OneFootball

RC Lens had been looking to pull off a rather romantic transfer by bringing now-former Manchester United defender Raphaël Varane (31) back to the club, however, according to a report from Mohamed Toubache-Ter, that now looks unlikely.

Varane, who came through the ranks at Lens before moving to La Liga giants Real Madrid at a young age, is currently a free agent, following the expiry of his contract at Manchester United. However, that doesn’t mean that any potential deal won’t be financially onerous. The former France international’s wage demands will be considerable.

Nonetheless, Lens, who have now introduced a more austere financial regime, had targeted a move, with Varane’s arrival seen as a “dream transfer” by the club’s president. However, it now looks set to be a dream that goes unrealised. The Frenchman recently travelled to Italy for talks with Como and there is confidence on their side that a deal can be completed.

There is much less confidence at Lens. Toubache-Ter describes the move as “too difficult” with the positions of the relevant parties “too far apart”. Lens may be in the market for a replacement for Kevin Danso later this summer but it looks increasingly likely that they’ll have to look elsewhere.
