A familiar name absent from recent Portugal squads is that of long-time servant Raphaël Guerreiro, who has spent over a year outside the international scene.
Guerreiro, who was part of the Seleção’s triumphant Euro 2016 side, has not added to his 65 caps for Portugal since last appearing in the 5-2 win over Sweden in March 2024. However, he has now revealed that his disappearance has been voluntary.
Speaking ahead of his Bayern Munich side taking on Benfica in the Club World Cup in the United States, Guerreiro was reminded of his 15-month spell outside Roberto Martinez’s squad, and whether the 31-year-old felt the door for a return was still open for him.
“Yeah, I already spoke with the coach and told him this season I wanted to take a break, because I had many injuries in my career,” Guerreiro said. “So it was important for me to take this break and he understood what I wanted.
“So now, of course, I think I’m able to go to the National team again, but I will talk with him before the call.”
Benfica fan
Guerreiro, who was born in France to a Portuguese father, also added that playing against his favourite team, Benfica, is always an occasion he relishes. “Yeah it’s very special for me, because I’m also a big fan of Benfica, so for me it’s always special. The last game we played against them in Champions League I was on the bench. I dunno for this game, but of course I hope I can play this beautiful club and for me it means a lot.”
