Rangers with ‘open mind’ for new free agent player additions | OneFootball

As we discussed earlier, the transfer window in Scotland is shut and Rangers cannot buy any new players, with the only activity now being any potential outgoings due to other countries’ transfers windows still being open.

James Tavernier is subject to big interest here and we’ll know by Friday if Rangers and he parted company or if he’s here for the long haul, but there’s another aspect Ibrox Noise understands remains very much on the cards.

Rangers added 9 new bodies, shipping out 11 – it is felt it wasn’t a vintage window, even if Rangers did spend around £16M, and that further bodies are still needed, and we’ve learned the club is still seeking new players on a free agency basis, although no such players are yet close, despite some claims they were.

There are plenty of free agents currently available, although it’s a market Rangers tend not to use too much outside of the windows.

Why?

Free agents’ contracts expired at the start of the window – the lucrative ones tended to get snapped up quickly, and if a player remains unattached after the window closes, it’s not generally a positive sign of how ‘wanted’ he is.

Kemar Roofe and Ryan Jack, sadly, remain free agents, having been let go in June, and despite both players’ clear talents no one has taken them on board, as a result of that dreadfully-chequered injury history.

And that means ‘damaged goods’ – why is ‘this’ player still a free agent, what’s ‘wrong’ with them.

That said, there are still good free agents – Adrien Rabiot, a £35M-value winger, still has no new club, ditto Anthony Martial and Memphis Depay not to mention Joel Matip.

Rangers can’t afford these guys, but a striker and a winger (and maybe a CB) remain needed – whether Rangers will go for it and take a ‘gamble’ on a free agency player we’ll learn fairly soon.
