Manchester United continue their pre-season preparations with a high-profile friendly against Rangers at Murrayfield on Saturday at 4pm (UK time).

There’s serious work to do for Erik ten Hag who, despite earning a new contract with a shock FA Cup final win over Manchester City — his second trophy in two years at Old Trafford — will be under pressure to improve vastly on last season’s eighth-place Premier League finish.

United’s latest test sees them take on Scottish giants Rangers, who themselves are looking to bounce back after finishing as runner-up to arch-rivals Celtic in both the Premiership and Scottish Cup — their only solace coming by winning the Scottish League Cup.

One of United’s biggest issues last season was finding a regular source of goals, with Rasmus Hojlund and Bruno Fernandes their top Premier League scorers with 10 each — the latter netting four of his from the penalty spot. The Red Devils have moved quickly this summer to try and rectify that issue with the signing of Joshua Zirkzee.

The Netherlands international — who made his first two senior international appearances for Oranje at Euro 2024 this summer — was Bologna’s top goalscorer last season with 12 in call competitions, 11 of which came in Serie A as he helped his club to a shock Champions League qualification. They are steady numbers, but it’s fair to say Zirkzee hasn’t yet fully delivered on the immense talent and acclaim from his days as a teenager at Bayern Munich.

However, given Hojlund’s patchy form last season, there is an opening at Old Trafford for Zirkzee if he hits the ground running. That’s exactly what the 23-year-old is aiming to do.

“It is a privilege to join such an iconic club. I have to take a short break now after being with the national team, but I’ll be coming back ready to make an impact straight away.”

Zirkzee is the first major name through the door at Old Trafford this summer but wasn’t available for United’s friendly against Rosenborg on Monday as he recovers from Euro 2024. It’s doubtful he will feature in this match either, with the likes of Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo also earning some rest after their run to the final with England.

John Lundstram and Borna Barisic both left Rangers on free transfers this summer, but the Glasgow giants have been busy strengthening their squad with the likes of Mohamed Diomande, Hamza Igamane and Jefte signing for handsome fees.
