The news that Rangers have been tenuously linked with Manchester United’s Christian Eriksen has understandably raised some eyebrows. The Danish midfielder, once one of Europe’s top creative forces, is now well past his best and represents everything Rangers should avoid in this rebuild. At 32 and with a reputation for inconsistency and fragility since his return to the game, Eriksen no longer offers the spark or dynamism we need in the engine room. Worse than that though is the stench of disloyalty that clings to him after what he did to Brentford.
This recent roundup shows just how ambitious Rangers are aiming to be in the market this summer. Youth, hunger and attitude are key traits we must prioritise. Eriksen does not fit that bill. He had a heart attack during Euro 2020 and was given the chance to relaunch his career by Brentford. He accepted it, played well and repaid them by bolting at the first bigger offer. That says everything. Loyalty matters in football and Brentford showed him every ounce of trust and support when few others would. Rangers need players who understand that kind of commitment and who would repay faith with fight, not those who leave at the first whiff of a better wage.
As we discussed previously, Rangers have already moved away from lazy signings and cheap headlines. Bringing in an ageing Premier League name just for star power would be a regressive step. It would be like going back to the Joey Barton or Aaron Ramsey days, and we all know how those ended. We need to stop living in the past and focus on building a strong future with players who want to be here and have something to prove.
Our summer predictions already made it clear that names like Eriksen are distractions. Rangers are trying to change a losing culture and that starts with smarter recruitment. Players like Diomande, Sterling and even Cortés before his injury, showed hunger. Eriksen’s attitude suggests the opposite. If he was willing to walk away from the club that literally saved his life, he will never bleed blue.
This latest report only reinforces the idea that Rangers are casting the net wide. But if Christian Eriksen is genuinely an option, we must close that door firmly.
