When Chelsea’s squad was announced for the upcoming Club World Cup, one of the surprise absences was that of Djordje Petrovic.
After a great season on loan, the Serbian stopper was expected to be fighting for his place as a potential number one for this season. Instead it seems he asked to be left out as he had been told he wasn’t in the frame to start for us this year.
They discussed the situation on the London is Blue podcast today.
“Petrovic is not involved in the squad. He has to be left out and wants to focus on his future… and he is not getting a guaranteed starter spot, so he’s going to look for first team football elsewhere,” Dan Dormer explained.
Nick Verlaney also gave his thoughts on the matter:
“First of all, no-one’s guaranteed a number one starting spot, nobody is guaranteed that. Nobody on the team. When you send a guy out on loan and he does as well as Petrovic did – he won [Strasbourg’s] player of the year, he was one of the higher rated goalkeepers in Ligue 1 and definitely in Europe, he’s 25, he’s on his way up. And remember that goalkeepers reach their peak and mature at a different time to outfield players. So he’s got a ways to go before he’s the best version of himself. I wish him the best and I hope that the club give him a speedy solution to the situation.”

We’re all in agreement then – we’re surprised he’s not been given a chance given how good he was last season, but if we’re going to cash in, now is the time to do it.
