Tottenham Hotspur’s defensive woes have been well-documented this season, with injuries decimating their backline.
Ange Postecoglou’s side has struggled to find stability at the back, and as a result, there are growing calls for reinforcements in the January transfer window.
One name that has recently emerged as a potential target is Getafe CF’s Omar Alderete, a player who could offer some much-needed cover.
With Tottenham’s central defenders suffering recurring injuries, the pressure is mounting on the club to act quickly. Could Alderete be the answer to Postecoglou’s defensive crisis?
Let’s take a look at the potential move and what it means for the club’s upcoming fixtures.

According to club insider John Wenham, Tottenham are looking to complete the signing of Getafe defender Omar Alderete as soon as the January transfer window opens.
Alderete, 28, has a release clause in his contract, which makes him an attainable target for Spurs. Wenham, speaking to Tottenham News, stated:
“It is good to see centre-backs being linked with the club. If this is true, then the player should be signed by 1 January. He has a release clause, so Tottenham know what the deal is. Have the money transferred by 9 am on 1 January and the player will be on his way to North London."
Wenham went on to express confidence in Tottenham’s scouting team, despite not knowing much about Alderete himself:
“I don’t know much about this player. However, I trust our scouting team, they have signed some other lesser-known players who have proven to be good signings, so why can’t they do that again?”
Tottenham’s need for a new defender is urgent, as both Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero have been sidelined for significant periods with injuries.
The pair’s absence has left Postecoglou with limited options, and the situation was exacerbated during their recent 4-3 defeat to Chelsea.
Despite being named in the starting XI, neither van de Ven nor Romero managed to last the full match, with both forced off due to injury.
In addition, Ben Davies, who had stepped in to cover for the injured duo, also picked up a hamstring injury, ruling him out for several weeks.
