PSG boss Luis Enrique says Liverpool have “three fighter jets in attack” they need to suppress to have any chance of advancing in the Champions League.

The Ligue 1 side host the Reds at the Parc des Princes for the first leg of their last-16 tie on Wednesday night, their first meeting in the knockouts of a major European competition since 1997.

One of the favourites to win the Champions League outright, Liverpool have been lethal going forward this season, scoring 83 goals in 36 Premier League and European games.

Enrique says he wants PSG to thwart the Merseyside outfit’s massive threat on the counter by dominating possession.

“It will be intense,” the Spaniard said at his pre-match press conference. “On paper, it is one of the best matches you can watch in Europe. They’re one of the best teams in terms of counter attacking.

“We have to be careful that we don’t suffer from their transitions. They have three fighter jets in attack, it’s not easy to stop them if we don’t impose our game on them.

“We will need the ball. Maybe we’re not as tough physically but we are one of the best teams in possession in Europe.”

Getting a positive result in the home leg will be crucial to PSG’s chances of reaching the quarter-finals, but Enrique won’t panic if they don’t.

“The first game will not determine who gets through,” he said. “If we were to lose at home and then win [and qualify] at Anfield, of course I would take that.”

PSG are on a five-game winning streak in the Champions League, scoring 21 goals and conceding three during this run.

Liverpool have already beaten French opposition this season, winning 2-1 over Lille on 21 January, while PSG defeated Premier League club Manchester City 4-2 at home the next day.
