PSG manager Christophe Galtier has spoken on the topic of the future of Lionel Messi as the Argentine closes in on the expiry of his contract with the Ligue 1 club.

The 35-year-old’s current contract with Les Parisiens expires on June 30. Not very long ago, it appeared that an extension was all but done, with reports from several media outlets claiming that a verbal agreement was in place over a new deal.

However, things have taken a turn in recent weeks, with it emerging that the contract negotiations are not as advanced as it was made to believe.

In fact, it has even been suggested that Messi might not be totally in favour of continuing at Parc des Princes, while PSG themselves have some apprehensions about a new contract.

Amidst this, Messi has been heavily linked with a return to FC Barcelona. The Catalan giants are keen on reuniting with their former captain and club legend two years after letting him leave on a free transfer.

Now, Galtier has spoken up on the matter of Messi’s future, stating that it is still too early to talk about contract extensions and that any decision will be made based on the will of all parties involved. However, he did stress that the Argentina captain was happy in Paris.

“It’s still too early to speak about Messi’s contract extension. I know that Leo, the management and the president discuss a lot. On Leo to be here next season, I repeat: it’s the will of each other. Messi is happy here,” Galtier said, as quoted by Fabrizio Romano.

While contract discussions with PSG continue, Messi’s father held a meeting with Barcelona president Joan Laporta in the recent past.

Furthermore, it has also emerged that Laporta allegedly issued an apology to the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner as he seeks to mend their broken relationship.

Messi is also attracting interest from the MLS and Saudi Arabia, but wants to stay in Europe for at least one more year. So, if an extension with PSG does not materialise, Barcelona could be a potential destination for the World Cup winner.

However, the Catalans’ financial situation would limit them from handing Messi a lucrative contract. So, re-signing him will be anything but straightforward.
