Paris Saint-Germain’s long wait for Champions League glory is finally over, and while celebrations erupted after their emphatic 5–0 win over Inter Milan, club captain Marquinhos took a moment to reflect on those who came close but fell short, including none other than Kylian Mbappe.
Now a Real Madrid player, Mbappe’s name still resonates deeply at the Parc des Princes. In a heartfelt interview following the final whistle, Marquinhos paid tribute to his former teammate, saying,
“He deserved it. It’s destiny. We don’t know what our life will turn out like. Kylian is a great player who deserves a lot. He’s been through a lot with us here.
“He’s a great friend and a great teammate. He’s given everything for Paris. The numbers he has, the games he’s played. He has given everything, and unfortunately, he didn’t get it,” said the PSG captain.

But the Champions League always eluded him and PSG. The French forward’s exit to Real Madrid was widely seen as a move driven by ambition to finally lift Europe’s most coveted trophy.
Ironically, PSG managed to achieve that dream the very season after he departed. Despite his departure, though, the Frenchman showed class and respect, taking to Instagram to congratulate his former club:
“The big day has finally arrived, the victory, and in the style of an entire club. Congratulations, PSG.”
The message came across as genuine, especially considering his well-known desire to win the Champions League with PSG during his years there.
When Mbappe left the French capital, he said his decision was based on the desire to win major titles, and he believed that Real Madrid offered the best path to that success.
Yet football, full of irony, had PSG lifting the very trophy he chased so long just months after his exit.
