Francesco Pio Esposito enjoyed a superb breakout season at Spezia last term.

Indeed, with 18 league goals, he was the second-best goal-scorer in Serie B, drawing a lot of inquiries in the process.

Napoli tried to sign him in the summer transfer window, but Cristian Chivu blocked the sale.

Aware of the youngster’s potential, the new Nerazzurri boss has decided to keep him in Milan this season.

Furthermore, Esposito is on the verge of making his debut for Italy in the upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

New head coach Gennaro Gattuso has handed him his maiden senior call-up for the Azzurri.

With Italy set to take on Estonia and Israel, it’s reasonable to expect Esposito to get some minutes on the pitch.

“Everything is definitely happening very quickly,” Esposito admitted. “I’m very happy to be here for my first call-up; it’s an incredible emotion.

“As for my Inter debut – you need to stay very balanced: this is a very positive moment.

“But in football, everything can change very quickly, and balance is essential.”

Meanwhile, he is aware he must fight Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram for a starting berth at Inter.

“It’s not about fighting for space, but rather wanting to always learn something from them because they are among the strongest forwards around.

“For me, it’s an opportunity.

“From Lautaro, his hunger, his ferocity. He always gives 100%, even in training.

“From Marcus, the simplicity in what he does, in taking on his man.”

Asked what his brother, Salvatore, told him after recieving his first Italy call-up, Esposito replied: “He always tells me to enjoy the experience without overthinking.

“After two years together, I had to step aside at the best possible moment because of the injury in Spezia–Cremonese.

“I was really disappointed because I had to bow out just when things were going great.

“When we’re lucky enough to be together, we try to talk about football as little as possible.

“This summer, when I met up with Sebastiano at the Club World Cup, we did compare ourselves as much as possible.”

Then, he finished talking about his potential Italy debut and the season with Inter.

“The coach is right – until you try, you can’t know if you’re ready, but we’re here to do our best,” Esposito added.

“All summer long, there was talk about me on the market, but there was never any doubt about me staying at Inter.

“I never wanted to go elsewhere; Inter is a dream come true, and the coach wanted to keep me. I never had any doubts.”
