The January transfer window has slammed shut.

It was a record-breaking window as far as Premier League clubs are concerned.

A huge £815 million was spent by the 20 clubs in January, with more than £275 million being spent on deadline day itself. The previous deadline record was £150 million in 2018.

And following a record summer expenditure of £1.9 billion, the total from both windows was always going to rewrite history. It comes in at £2.8 billion during the 2022/23 season.

Wow.

The Premier League's financial dominance is there for all to see.

It accounted for 79% of the total across Europe's 'big five' football leagues in January. While Chelsea's outlay of £288 million was more than the total of all clubs in the Bundesliga, La Liga, Serie A and Ligue 1.

You don't need to be a finance expert to know that Chelsea have spent more than any other Premier League club this season.

But to illustrate that best, a graph has emerged showing the net spend of every Premier League club this season.

Chelsea, unsurprisingly, lead the way with an outlay of £548.7 million.

But where does everyone else fit in?

Well, Manchester United have a net spend just shy of £200 million and find themselves in second place. Nottingham Forest, who have signed a total of 28 players this season, are third at £190.59 million.

West Ham may be embroiled in a relegation fight right now but they have the fourth highest net spend at £173.85 million.

Newcastle may be the richest club in world football but they're only fifth in the net spend table this season at £169.80 million.

Southampton (£147.15m), Arsenal (£146.96m), Tottenham (£145.50m), Bournemouth (£75.45m) and Wolves (£69.35m) make up the top 10.

Down at the other end and there are four clubs who have actually made a profit this season.

Brighton are sitting on a net spent of -£105.60m after selling Marc Cucurella, Yves Bissouma and Leandro Trossard for big money this season.

Man City have made a £62.76 million profit which includes sales of Raheem Sterling, Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko to Premier League rivals.

Leicester have made £23.5 million in the transfer market, selling Wesley Fofana for big money last summer.

While Everton are also in the green following their sale of Anthony Gordon to Newcastle.

Tim Bridge, lead partner in Deloitte's Sports Business Group, said: "The record spending by Premier League clubs this season is beyond anything that we've seen before.

"Premier League clubs have outspent those within the rest of Europe's 'big five' leagues by almost four to one in this transfer window, allowing them to hold on to their key players, while attracting top-talent from overseas.

"However, while there is a clear need to invest in squad size and quality to retain a competitive edge, there will always be a fine balance to strike between prioritising success on-pitch and maintaining financial sustainability.

"The decline in spending across the English football system is likely to be of growing concern for members of the EFL and could further fuel the debate around distributing finances more evenly across the pyramid."
