Middlesbrough could welcome back Dael Fry and Jonny Howson this weekend, as the duo were seen training with the first-team ahead of Bristol City’s visit on Saturday.

It has been a mixed campaign for Boro so far, with Michael Carrick’s side sitting ninth in the table, and whilst they are only two points away from the play-offs, they have struggled for consistency in the opening months.

It should be said that injuries have been a factor, with Fry and Howson among those to have been absent for most of the campaign.

However, in a fresh boost, the Northern Echo has revealed that the pair were pictured training with the rest of the squad ahead of the game this weekend.

It wasn’t all good news for the Teesside outfit, as the report states that forward Tommy Conway wasn’t seen with his teammates, with the Scotland international having missed the past three games, so he is seemingly still working his way back to full fitness.

Centre-back Fry hasn’t actually played a competitive game for Boro since February, with a pelvic issue meaning he missed the run-in.

But, the update explains that he has been back with the group in recent weeks, and he appears to have come through it unscathed, so it may be the case that he is in contention for an appearance against the Robins, or he could at least make the bench, as Carrick will not take any risks with the defender.

Meanwhile, the influential Howson has been absent for the majority of this season, with his last game coming in the impressive League Cup victory at Leeds back on August 14.

The 36-year-old would bring experience and leadership to the Boro side, so he is another important figure, even if he is no longer a guaranteed name in the first XI.

As mentioned, Boro haven’t really got going yet this season, although there were positive signs as they beat Stoke and then West Brom, but they then went on to lose at Watford in the last game before the international break.

Nevertheless, they’re still firmly in the pack of clubs that will hope to push for the play-offs, and it’s still very early in the season, with the table taking shape.

But, Carrick will view this block of games going into the November break as a great chance to build some momentum, and that starts against a Bristol City side that are yet to win away from home in the league this season.

Of course, it will help to have all his key players available, and even though there remain a few absentees, the likes of Fry and Howson could make a difference if they are out on the pitch.
