Manchester United are working on a deal to sign Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna and have agreed personal terms with the forward.

Zirkzee has emerged as the leading name for Manchester United as the Red Devils look to sign a centre-forward this summer.

Anthony Martial’s exit leaves the club without a recognised alternative to Rasmus Hojlund and Zirkzee is considered a player who can complement the Dane in the forward line.

The 22-year-old impressed as Bologna exceeded expectations to secure Champions League qualification in 2023-24, scoring 11 league goals. Zirkzee led all forwards in Italy’s top division for successful take-ons and was named Serie A Young Footballer of the Year.

United believe the €40m (£34m) release clause in Zirkzee’s contract represents fair value, even alongside a ‘sizeable’ agent commission as part of the agreement on personal terms. However, the release clause must be paid in full which offers a potential cashflow issue, according to The Athletic.

Zirkzee has given the ‘green light’ to the move and the transfer could accelerate once the Netherlands conclude their Euro 2024 campaign.

The forward made his debut for the Oranje in Saturday’s 2-1 win over Turkey in the quarter-finals after being a late call-up to the squad following injuries to Frenkie de Jong and Teun Koopmeiners. Ronald Koeman’s side face England in the last four on Wednesday.

United are also interested in signing Zirkzee’s international teammate Matthijs de Ligt. Negotiations are ongoing with Bayern Munich over a deal for the defender.
