Gelhardt looked set to make the move to Home Park, but that deal could have hit the rocks now, following Wayne Rooney's exit.
Plymouth Argyle's move for Leeds United forward Joe Gelhardt is now in doubt after Wayne Rooney's dismissal.
According to Alan Nixon, the Pilgrims had hoped to get a deal over the line for the striker, who was also keen on a move to Home Park when the former England striker was at the helm.
Rooney, 39, is one of the Three Lions' best-ever strikers, with only Harry Kane scoring more goals than him for England.
But his managerial career hasn't panned out as well, doing fairly well at Derby County, but failing to thrive at Birmingham City and Plymouth.
And his departure from the latter was announced on New Year's Eve, having majorly struggled during his time in Devon, particularly away from home.
This has potentially placed a move for Gelhardt in doubt, which is a blow for the Pilgrims in their quest to secure Championship football beyond May.
Plymouth had been strong contenders in the race for Gelhardt.
It seems as though Rooney played a big part in this, as a former world class striker.
Now Rooney has left, Nixon believes the deal is now in the balance, despite the player previously being given clearance by Leeds to secure a loan move.
This is a bit of a blow for Plymouth, considering the fact he can be lethal in front of goal, but they may not miss him as much if they can replace him adequately.
Whether Gelhardt will be his replacement remains to be seen though.
Gelhardt isn't going to win much game time for the remainder of the season, unless there's a big injury crisis at Elland Road.
But the forward can't rely on that in his quest to win more time on the pitch, so he needs to secure an exit.
Ideally, he needs to make a permanent exit and settle down elsewhere, but it would be difficult to see Leeds sanctioning a permanent exit during this window.
His contract doesn't expire for quite some time yet and they will want the player to secure more game time out on loan, which could allow them to sell the forward for a higher fee.
