Plymouth Argyle could make Luton Town regret allowing Bim Pepple to join them if he becomes a smash-hit for the Pilgrims.
Plymouth Argyle have taken a punt on Luton Town striker Bim Pepple, who will be leading the Pilgrims’ frontline alongside Owen Oseni next season, as it stands.
It’s been a summer of wholesale change at Home Park, with a new manager, backroom staff, and a fresh crop of new players, after many of Argyle’s key players departed following their relegation to League One.
Whilst some signings have been the source of much more excitement than others, one that might have gone slightly under the radar is the acquisition of young striker Pepple from League One rivals Luton.
The forward was signed by the Hatters in August 2022, returning to his country of birth for an undisclosed fee. He was sent out on several different loan spells in both England and Scotland, before departing Kenilworth Road permanently in July, having never made a senior appearance for Town.
However, Pepple will be playing at the same level as his former employers in the coming season, after signing for Plymouth. Whilst this signing is a big gamble for Tom Cleverley, he will hope that the forward will make Matt Bloomfield regret his decision to allow him to depart.
It’s been nearly three years since Pepple returned to England after catching the eye in Canada for Cavalry FC. Over that time, he has had five different loan spells, which have yielded mixed results.
His first three moves, to Grimsby Town, Bromley, and Inverness Caledonian Thistle, were a wholesale failure. The youngster featured a combined 39 times across all competitions during his first three loan spells, scoring just two goals, both of which came during his time in Scotland.
However, a lifeline was thrown his way in the summer by National League side Southend United, and he grabbed it with both hands. Pepple scored 11 goals in 23 appearances across all competitions for the Seasiders, which led Luton to recall him and test him at the next level, League Two.
The 22-year-old signed on loan with Chesterfield for the second half of the campaign, notching five goals and 1 assist in 23 appearances for the Spireites. After two solid loan spells in the fourth and fifth tiers, Pepple is now seemingly ready to make the step-up to League One, but with Plymouth rather than with Luton.
Whilst it took a few different loan moves for the Canadian to find somewhat of a goalscoring mojo, the last 12 months have been a key turning point in Pepple’s career, and his stints at Southend and Chesterfield certainly put him on the map.
The 22-year-old has been one of several departures at Kenilworth Road this summer. With the mass exodus that’s expected following relegation, the striker’s move to Devon is one that’s gone slightly under the radar, which Luton could live to regret.
Town have added Nakhi Wells to their ranks, but Jacob Brown and Elijah Adebayo will likely be on their way out of Bedfordshire, and another striker, Lasse Nordas, has struggled during his time at the club. With that in mind, Pepple could’ve been a useful asset for Bloomfield if Luton's goalscoring woes continue into next season.
Argyle have also suffered a mass exodus following their relegation, but in this case, Pepple will likely benefit. Oseni, Joe Hatch and Freddie Issaka are the only recognised strikers currently at the club, who are all under the age of 23 as well, meaning minutes will likely come more consistently for the Canadian, should this remain the case.
Pepple has a great platform to use at Home Park, playing in a high-quality team and fresh off the back of a strong 2024-25 campaign. He boasts the most impressive goalscoring record of all four of Plymouth's young strikers, and his powerful playing style will likely suit Cleverley's football, as he's capable of playing in a high-press, and using his body well as the sole striker.
After not being given a chance to prove himself at Kenilworth Road, Argyle will be hopeful that their new striker can use this opportunity to prove a point to his former club and make them regret their decision to sell him to a promotion rival.
