According to reports, Plymouth Argyle are honing in on the appointment of former Watford boss Tom Cleverley as their new manager.

It seems that the hunt for a new manager in Devon is about to come to a close, as John Percy of the Telegraph reported on Thursday afternoon that the Pilgrims were in advanced talks with the former Manchester United midfielder to take the vacancy at Home Park.

Argyle have been without a manager since the end of May, following Miron Muslic's shock move to 2.Bundesliga outfit FC Schalke 04. This brought to an end a four-month stint, in which the Bosnian-Austrian failed to keep the club in the Championship.

Meanwhile at Watford, owner Gino Pozzo displayed his cutthroat habits once again by sacking Cleverley after a solid first full season in charge. This left Hornets supporters outraged, as the 35-year-old was a popular figure at the club.

However, it looks like Plymouth are set to capitalise on Pozzo's ruthlessness and appoint a really exciting up-and-coming young coach to try and steer them back to the second tier at the first time of asking.

Tom Cleverley would be an exciting appointment for Plymouth Argyle

There have been plenty of names linked with the vacancy at Home Park in the last couple of weeks, ranging from the likes of Ian Evatt and Des Buckingham, to Jack Wilshere and Stephen Robinson.

One name that often cropped up on social media was Cleverley, who has been out of work for just over a month following a seemingly harsh and bizarre decision by Watford to sack him.

The 35-year-old proved to be an exciting up-and-coming manager with the Hornets, guiding them to a respectable mid-table finish in the Championship in his first full season at the club.

The Hertfordshire side are far from what they were just a matter of years ago on the pitch, so for Cleverley to secure a steady mid-table finish was acceptable to supporters, but not to owner Pozzo.

The former midfielder became the 21st managerial casualty of Pozzo's 13 years at the club, with the Italian citing the need for a 'more experienced' man in the dugout.

However, Watford's decision could become Plymouth's gain, as they'll be appointing one of the most exciting young managers in the EFL, who has been touted for plenty of jobs in recent weeks.

As mentioned, the interest in Cleverley hasn't been low. The 35-year-old has been linked with a whole host of vacancies in recent weeks, either through supporters on social media or factual reports.

It's likely that once the season gets underway and managers start getting sacked, that interest will only increase, which is why Plymouth are extremely smart by moving quickly to secure the services of the former Hornets chief.

Appointing Cleverley would also be a huge statement of intent from the Pilgrims, as reports emerged last week that the ex-England international wanted to remain in the Championship. Convincing him to come to League One is a testament to the pull that Argyle have when it comes to recruiting staff and players.
