Paris Saint-Germain carved out a 1-0 win against a defensively solid Angers side for their first home match of the season, with Fabián Ruiz scoring the winner at the start of the second half.
After stuttering to an opening-day victory last week in Nantes, the European champions turned up to their first home outing of the season with a recogisably first-choice lineup.
Despite that, Angers managed to keep the hosts at bay throughout the first half. The first clear-cut chance of the match would come from a penalty drawn by the returning João Neves on the edge of the box, and Ousmane Dembélé would send the ensuing spot-kick well over the bar.
The Angevin defence held firm otherwise, led by the commanding Ousmane Camara in the middle of the five-man defence. Former Bordeaux full-back Jacques Ekomié was the standout in the visitors’ backline, blunting any threat that PSG’s right wing would pose.
The reigning champions did manage to cut through at the start of the second half, with Fabián Ruiz making the most of Haris Belkebla’s failed clearance fom Désiré Doué’s low cross. Luis Enrique’s men were visibly more confident after breaking the deadlock, with Angers’ forays forward increasingly few and far between past the hour mark. Despite that, Alexandre Dujeux’s men kept the score down and even came close to creating an equaliser in stoppage-time
“Repeating what we did last year might work, but we’ll need to be prepared to be unpredictable, different, and have more options”, Luis Enrique pointed out in his pre-match press conference. In light of the team’s unconvincing first two league performaces, the Asturian may be tempted to experiment sooner rather than later.
Paris Saint-Germain player ratings
Lucas Chevalier, 5
Achraf Hakimi, 4
Marquinhos, 5
Willian Pacho, 6 – An authoritative display from the Ecuador international, who notably kept the usually dangerous Esteban Lepaul quiet. A potential one-on-one opportunity for the Frenchman in the first half was dealt with particularly effectively.
Nuno Mendes, 5
João Neves, 6 – On his return from suspension, the Portuguese midfielder covered the most ground among his midfield partners and drew a penalty in the first half. Replaced by Warren Zaïre-Emery soon after the hour mark.
Vitinha, 4
Fabián Ruiz, 6
Désiré Doué, 7 – The 20-year-old was comfortably PSG’s most incisive forward, and spent the evening gliding past Raolisoa. Followed up a poor free-kick in the first half with an impressive long-range curling effort that skimmed the bar, and then created the opening goal at the start of the second half with a dangerous low cross. Replaced by Ibrahim Mbaye for the final 15 minutes.
Ousmane Dembélé, 4 – A misfiring performance from the Ballon d’Or frontrunner, who combined well with teammates but struggled to deliver in the final third. Replaced for the final 10 minutes by Kang-in Lee.

Selected Angers player ratings
Jacques Ekomié, 7
Ousmane Camara, 8
Esteban Lepaul, 4 – The in-form striker understandably saw little service, with both Marquinhos and Pacho making decisive interventions the few times he was able to find some space.
