Inter beat Udinese 3-1 on Match Day 23 of the 2022/2023 Serie A season after goals from Romelu Lukaku, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Lautaro Martinez in front of a packed San Siro crowd.
The Nerazzurri started off slow and struggled to create anything of importance against a well organized Udinese defence.
That is until the 18th minute when Denzel Dumfries was brought down and the referee pointed to the spot after VAR review.
Romelu Lukaku needed two tries to break the deadlock after his first attempt was saved by Silvestri but the penalty was ordered to be retaken.
Udinese equalized just before half-time when Lovic scored following a collective defensive collapse by Inter.
In the second half, Inter piled on the pressure without creating anything of importance or significance. That is until substitute Hakan Calhanoglu drove up the ball squared it for Federico Dimarco who whipped in a one time cross for Henrikh Mkhitaryan who hit it one time of the half volley, 2-1.
Lautaro Martinez managed to both miss a one on one with Silvestri and score to make it 3-1 in a matter of minutes, game over, three points and now Porto.
Samir Handanovic – 5: Did not face many shots, but conceded the only shot on target Udinese had. Not necessarily his fault, but is a continuous theme when he plays.
Matteo Darmian – 6: Did alright, but was substituted at half-time due to picking up a booking. Should have done better marking his man on the goal conceded.
Francesco Acerbi – 6,5: Did well to get involved in the attack, making himself another option. Was strong in defence, making many quality clearances.
Alessandro Bastoni – 7: Strong performance which often goes under the radar. Long-balls were on point today, as well as his crosses into the box.
Denzel Dumfries – 6: Struggled in the first half, poor first touch and dribbling continue to be an issue. Made an incredible key block in the second half to prevent a certain goal.
Nicolo Barella – 7: Created many chances for his teammates as well as provided strong pressure on the opposing defence. Unlucky not to register an assist.
Marcelo Brozovic – 6: Having just returned from injury and making his first start since, did not look up to par today. Made several recoveries but no impact otherwise.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan – 7,5: Slow start due to fatigue from recent matches, but worked himself into the match. Scored an incredible goal to give Inter the lead and had an all-around good game. MOTM.
Federico Dimarco – 6,5: Created dangerous chances in the opposing box from smart crosses. Created second goal with a fantastic ball to the top of the box.
Romelu Lukaku – 6,5: First penalty was saved, got lucky to be able to re-take and score. Decent movement and lay-offs up front, but poor dribbling overall.
Edin Dzeko – 6: Very quiet night, ran around and completed his cardio exercises but did not create much or have a significant impact on the game.
Danilo D’Ambrosio – 6,5: Replaced Darmian at half-time and did well against a decent strike force with speed. Provided strong defensive cover and also created offensive chances.
Lautaro Martinez – 7: Was brought on for Lukaku in the 66th minute. Squandered an incredibly easy chance but redeemed himself by scoring Inter’s third goal moments later.
Hakan Calhanoglu – 7,5: Came on for Brozovic in the 66th minute and completely changed the game. Was dynamic in midfield, driving the ball forward and trying to make something happen.
Robing Gosens – N/A: Entered for Dimarco in the 79th minute. Did not play enough to be rated.
Roberto Gagliardini – N/A: Substituted on for Mkhitaryan in the 84th minute. Did not play enough to be rated.
Simone Inzaghi – 6: Odd choice to start Handanovic randomly today, and it nearly cost him. To his credit, substitutes made the difference and secured the win today.
Federico Dionisi – 6: Missed a clear penalty decision for Inter early yet awarded one minutes later, thanks to VAR. Got the majority of the minor decisions right tonight.
Inter – 6,5: Slow performance in the first half and things were not looking up. Nervous start to the second half but finished the match very strongly, scoring twice.
