Borussia Dortmund took a step closer towards qualifying for the Champions League knockout stages after a 2-0 win against Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United at the Signal Iduna Park on Tuesday evening. Edin Terzić called for focus before the game and it’s the response that his side needed following their 4-0 defeat in the Klassiker against Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga on Saturday.

Niclas Füllkrug opened his account in the Champions League with a superb controlled finish past Nick Pope after 26 minutes as Dortmund controlled the opening stages of the tie. Julian Brandt, who has been BVB’s best player this season, continued to shine with Karim Adeyemi back in the side in place of Donyell Malen.

Joelinton came close for Newcastle United in the early stages of the second-half, but was unable to guide his effort past Gregor Kobel, before Brandt then forced Pope into another excellent save. Dortmund then found themselves in a 2v1 situation and BVB’s best player on the night, Brandt, doubled his side’s lead.

Dortmund do the double over Newcastle United which could prove important in the head-to-head. Tonight’s a huge result for Borussia Dortmund in what’s a tough Champions League group.
