Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot has won the Players’ Player of the Year award for the 2023/24 season.

During a challenging campaign that saw United finish in eighth place in the Premier League, Dalot was a beacon of hope for supporters and as it turns out, his teammates.

He has undoubtedly been one of the team’s most consistent performers.

No outfield player has made more appearances (49) than Dalot this term. Even more impressive is that he has not only played in his favoured right-back role but has also been deployed to great effect on the left in the absence of a natural and senior left-back.

The Portugal international has performed well in both positions. He managed three goals and five assists across all competitions.

United’s Players’ Player of the Year award is decided by the stars on the club’s payroll and Dalot’s exploits this season have been acknowledged by his teammates.

It’s the first time Dalot has claimed the prize. He spoke to club media and said, “For me, it’s even more special [than the main award]. I have a lot of consideration for the fans; they are a big part of me and the biggest part of this club.”

“But my team-mates are the ones who see each other every single day. We have to come here and we still have to fight, and we still have to share these moments when things are not going well, and when the things are going well.”

“This, ultimately, is my second family and this recognition by your team-mates, I think it’s really special, because they see you every day, they know the work that you put in behind the scenes.”

When asked for his favourite moment of the season, Dalot pinpointed the pulsating 4-3 FA Cup quarter-final win over Liverpool.

On that occasion, the 25-year-old was immense both in defence and attack as he helped United proceed to the next stage of the competition.

Meanwhile, Alejandro Garnacho’s superb overhead kick against Everton has been voted as the Premier League’s Goal of the Season.

Up next for United is the small assignment of facing Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the FA Cup final this weekend at Wembley.
