Pep Guardiola admits that he needs to change his approach after Man City lost again in the Premier League.
Jhon Duran and Morgan Rogers both scored as Aston Villa secured a deserved 2-0 win at home over the defending champions on Saturday.
The clubs swapped places in the table as Man City dropped to sixth with their sixth defeat in the top flight this season. They have now lost nine of their last 12 games in all competitions.
They were dealt another blow as Guardiola confirmed that John Stones went off at halftime with a recurrence of a foot injury that sidelined him for almost a month.
“We make a really good first half, second half we dropped,” he told TNT Sports. “We changed our pressing for the reason John could not continue. Congratulations Aston Villa and keep going.”
Guardiola praised Villa following a strong performance in which Unai Emery’s men created the better chances and defended well.
“In the mid-block they are so strong,” he said. “We have good moments, we had chances, more chances than in the [Manchester] United game, but in the second half we dropped and our pressing was not good enough.
“We struggled a little bit and we could not drop them well. We found a goal in the end, but too late. We struggle to score and we concede goals.”
Guardiola says it will be a “step by step” process to get the team’s confidence back amid their worst run of form under the manager. “We have nice personalities in the team and sooner or later we are going to find it.”
Asked if he has to change his approach in order to see an improvement in results, he responded: “Yeah. I have to do it. Back my players, that is what will be different.”
