West Ham United have been inconsistent in the Premier League over the past few years. Despite their impressive European performances of yesteryear, they have not been able to secure a place in the top six in the Premier League recently. Frequent injuries and a lack of depth in the squad have weakened the Hammers.

The club have let go of several veterans this summer, marking the start of a new era. The departure of experienced players like Lukasz Fabianski has left a void in the goalkeeping department. So, Graham Potter has a lot of work ahead of the new season.

West Ham have a history of investing in young talent and finding the players of the future. After the big sale of Mohammed Kudus and the departure of some senior players, the club are currently in the process of rebuilding. They are looking for a new goalkeeper to strengthen the backbone of the squad.

Alphonse Areola is currently in the No.1 role, but there is a feeling that the club want to increase competition by bringing in another talented player. Potter wants to take this side to the next level by changing the squad’s mentality and depth.

West Ham eye Zion Suzuki

Parma-Live has reported that West Ham United made an offer for Parma’s Japanese goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, which the club rejected. This clearly shows that the Hammers are prioritising young and promising options. Suzuki made the right move to get used to European football by joining Sint-Truidense in 2023. His development has been eye-catching. Therefore, Parma do not seem willing to sell him cheaply at the moment and could demand a large transfer fee.

The Japanese player has quick reflexes, and his stature gives him confidence inside the goalpost. Given his age, he has a high chance of continued improvement. If West Ham manage to sign him, he could have tough competition for the goalkeeping position with Alphonse Areola. Graham Potter thinks that a player who can serve the club for a long time can be essential for building the future.

The Way Forward?

West Ham United should not panic after Parma rejected the offer. If the club are really serious about getting Zion Suzuki, then they should be a little aggressive and send a new offer. The club must understand that investing in young goalkeepers can lay a strong foundation for the future. However, they should also keep working on alternative options so that the situation does not slip out of hand at the last moment.

On the other hand, instead of making a decision under pressure, they should also seriously look at names like John Victor of Botafogo. If building the future is the main focus of Graham Potter’s plans, then he should not shy away from spending money in that direction. Ultimately, this money will be well spent if the Hammers are patient and find a long-term solution for the #1 position that fans can look at with pride for years to come.
