Opinion: Pre-Season Performance Suggests Kai Havertz Still Has a Big Role to Play

In their latest pre-season fixture, Arsenal extended their winning run to two games by defeating Newcastle 3-2 in Singapore. The match served as another valuable step in building fitness ahead of the new campaign, but it also offered encouragement in terms of individual performances. Max Dowman and Martin Zubimendi stood out and drew praise from Mikel Arteta, while Mikel Merino and Martin Ødegaard were both on the scoresheet. However, one player who deserves a special mention is Kai Havertz.

Havertz Impressive in Victory Over Newcastle

The German international played a key role in the Gunners’ comeback. He provided the assist for Mikel Merino’s equaliser with a clever touch in the 33rd minute, and moments later he forced an own goal from Alex Murphy to give Arsenal the lead. This impactful display was a step up from his quieter performance against AC Milan and a sign that Havertz is sharpening up ahead of the season opener.

Havertz also appeared noticeably stronger and more physical, possibly reflecting extra work in the gym during the summer. At 6ft 4in, his improved frame adds another dimension to his game and could be crucial in Arsenal’s high-intensity pressing system. While much of the summer focus has centred around the arrival of Viktor Gyökeres, Havertz’s quality and tactical suitability mean he is still expected to play a significant role.

A Vital Piece of Arteta’s Tactical Puzzle

Havertz remains the most natural fit for the way Arsenal play. His combination of height, technique and intelligent pressing makes him an ideal link-up option, particularly against low-block teams. While Gyökeres adds transition threat and direct power, Havertz offers the kind of subtlety and cohesion that helps unlock compact defences.

His versatility will be essential over the course of a long season, especially with Champions League football returning and a difficult early fixture list. While his goal-scoring record has been questioned, Havertz was on track to reach 20 goals last season before injury struck. With a full pre-season under his belt, there is every reason to believe he can make an even greater impact this time around.
