Opinion: It’s too early to go all-in on Chukwuemeka

After an impressive performance against SC Freiburg, which included his first goal in Black and Yellow, Borussia Dortmund’s loaned Chelsea midfielder, Carney Chukwuemeka, has become a hot topic of discussion. Multiple sources have already reported the young Englishman’s buy-option is 30-million Euros.

While I think Chukwuemeka has high potential, it’s difficult for me to make a case justifying his 30-milliom euro price tag. Chukwuemeka started his first match for Dortmund last weekend, and scored to make it 2-0. His impressive technical ability was showcased in the second half as he also created Dortmund’s third goal, easily finished by Brandt and Guirassy.

Chukwuemeka’s first half in the game against Freiburg was admittedly underwhelming however, as he turned over the ball too easily, and frequently chose the more difficult pass, or dribble. His goal, while it had incredible speed, did take a deflection in its way into the net. But a goal is a goal, and Chukwuemeka deserved it.

My biggest concern is Chukwuemeka’s fitness. He’s been with the club on loan since early February but has made just five appearances, with one start. He played 70 minutes on Saturday, which was more time on the pitch than his other four appearances combined. I’m not arguing the kid’s potential, but with only 6 league games left, the opportunity to prove himself is closing. The sample size is simply too small to justify paying double Chukwuemeka’s market value; 15-euros according to Transfermarkt.

I like Carney Chukwuemeka, and I hope he keeps improving, but 30-million is a hefty fee for a player we’ve seen so little of. There has to be a high level of confidence that he’ll deliver if the deal is to be triggered- we need consistent performances.  It's easy to be impulsive; I really wanted to sign Ian Maatsen last summer, but the price couldn’t justify it, despite his impressive performances for BVB. Sometimes it's best to simply appreciate the player while we have them.
