There were several impressive performers for Manchester City in their 2-nil win over Everton yesterday. Nico O’Reilly scored City’s opening goal as he showed that he is a young player made for the big moment. Matheus Nunes was also superb at right-back for the full 90 minutes at Goodison Park. Josko Gvardiol was another as he was absolutely brilliant at centre-back and his performance was crucial in his team’s win.
Time and time again yesterday Josko Gvardiol was there to make a crucial challenge in yesterday’s match. Often, when Everton got through City’s defence, it was Gvardiol who was there to defuse the situation. He made several crucial interventions throughout yesterday’s match as he showed that he could potentially be the player for Manchester City to build their defence around. On the ball, Gvardiol was his usual composed self, and often, when his teammates needed an outlet in possession when hurried by Everton’s press, Gvardiol was it.
It isn’t a surprise to see Josko Gvardiol thriving at centre-back. When he arrived at Manchester City from RB Leipzig he was regarded as one of the finest young defensive talents in football. He made the left-back position his own upon his arrival at the club. But in recent matches, he has shown that he belongs at the heart of Manchester City’s defence. He proved that once again yesterday. If he didn’t play in the manner that he did Pep Guardiola’s side may have struggled to beat a plucky Everton outfit.
For me, Josko Gvardiol was Manchester City’s man-of-the-match yesterday. He was a rock at the back and his performance was crucial to Manchester City’s vital win at Goodison Park.
