Lyon right-back Saël Kumbedi (20) has joined Wolfsburg on a season-long loan with an option to buy, both clubs have announced. The 20-year-old joined Les Gones three years ago from Le Havre in a €1m move. His profile and his experience at such a young age have made him an attractive prospect for a handful of European clubs. Wolfsburg have agreed to a €1m loan fee. Kumbedi’s buy option rises to €6m with a further €2m in performance-related add-ons.

Kumbedi’s loan move to Wolfsburg includes a 10% sell-on percentage. The 20-year-old full-back will wear the No. 26 jersey with the Bundesliga side. The 2022 U17 European champion with France was an unused substitute in Saturday’s 3-0 home win against Metz, as Ainsley Maitland-Niles featured on Lyon’s right defensive flank.

According to RMC Sport, Lyon have shown an interest in signing free agent César Azpilicueta to bolster Paulo Fonseca’s options at right-back. OL will host their bitter rivals Marseille this Sunday for the Choc des Olympiques.
