As expected, AC Milan dispensed with the services of Sérgio Conceição on Thursday evening, bringing an end to the Portuguese coach’s short stay at San Siro.
Conceição leaves the Rossoneri after just six months in charge, having replaced countryman Paulo Fonseca midway through the campaign, and will now be followed in the Milan hotseat by experienced manager Massimiliano Allegri.
“AC Milan and Sérgio Conceição will not continue their journey together next season,” read the club’s statement.
“The Club would like to thank Sérgio and his staff for their commitment, professionalism and dedication shown during their time leading the First Team over the past few months.
“The AC Milan family parts with the coach who won the 50th trophy in the Club’s history, wishing him the best for the future.”
Conceição leaves with a record of 16 wins, 5 draws and 10 defeats from his 31 matches in charge, which began in promising fashion when he lifted the Italian SuperCup after beating Juventus and Inter back in January. However, a disappointing exit in the Champions League to Feyenoord and an 8th place Serie A finish left Conceição under pressure, which was ramped up when the Rossoneri lost the Coppa Italia final to Bologna.
The former Porto boss may not stray far, with reports in Italy adding him to the shortlist to fill the vacant position at Lazio. Conceição is considered a strong contender due to his playing days with the capital club, where he became a fan favourite after helping Lazio win the Scudetto in 2000.
“I had a great time in Rome, the fans of FC Porto and Lazio have stayed in my heart,” Conceição told Radiosei last September. “You never know where you might end up as a coach, but these two clubs and their fans fill my heart and my heart is full when I return to Rome.”
