Manchester United have confirmed the departures of Aoife Mannion and Alyssa Aherne following the expiry of their respective contracts.
A statement by the club read, “Everybody at United thanks Aoife and Alyssa for their contributions during their time at the club, and wishes them the best of luck for the future.”
Mannion joined United in the summer of 2021 from cross-town rivals Manchester City.
She has been a solid presence at United, both on and off the pitch, racking up 55 appearances for the club across all competitions.
The Republic of Ireland international helped United win their first major trophy last year, when Marc Skinner’s side beat Tottenham Hotspur to clinch the Adobe Women’s FA Cup.
She came on as a substitute during the final at Wembley.
Mannion was also instrumental in United qualifying for Europe twice.
Aherne on the other hand, came through the ranks at United before signing her first professional contract with the Reds in May 2023.
She joined United at the age of 13 and impressed for the youth teams.
The 21-year-old was a key member of the Under-21 side that clinched both the WSL Academy League and Cup titles in 2022. She became the 21st player to graduate into the senior women’s team since its reformation in 2018.
But she has gained most of her senior football experience away from Leigh Sports Village, having lined up for the likes of Burnley, Everton and Sheffield United on loan.
With Mannion and Aherne departing, Marc Skinner will no doubt be eager to bring in suitable replacements as he looks to reinforce his squad and build on the momentum of the 2024/25 season.
