After selling Malick Thiaw to Newcastle for €42m including bonuses, Milan immediately got his replacement – 23-year-old Belgian Koni De Winter.

The center back arrives from Genoa in a deal estimated at around €20 million. The official statement arrived on Wednesday evening:

“Milan is delighted to announce the permanent signing of Koni De Winter from Genoa CFC. The Belgian defender has signed a contract with the Club until 30 June 2030.

“Born in Antwerp (Belgium) on 12 June 2002, Koni De Winter began his journey playing youth football for Lierse and then Zulte Waregem, before joining Juventus in 2018. He played youth football for the Bianconeri, as well as for their U23 side. He made his first-team debut on 23 November in a Champions League fixture against Chelsea. After a loan spell with Empoli, he made a permanent switch to Genoa, with whom he played 57 times and scored three goals in two seasons.

“In March 2024, he was called up to the Belgium side for the first time and went on to make his international debut against the Republic of Ireland. Koni De Winter will wear the number 5 shirt.”

De Winter is Milan’s 6th summer signing, after Samuele Ricci, Luka Modrić, Pietro Terracciano, Pervis Estupiñan and Ardon Jashari. He will soon also be joined by Zachary Athekame of Young Boys.
