The Club World Cup is over, and Chelsea can now really get stuck into the transfer market.
With so many important signings already made ahead of the summer, the focus for the next month will be on sales, and today we’ve had word of an important one being concluded.
Djordje Petrovic playing in goal for Strasbourg.
A couple of weeks after he was heavily linked to Sunderland, and just a week after Bournemouth came into the equation, Petrovic has been announced as a new Cherries player.
The fee is being reported at around £25m, which is a pretty hefty sum for a goalkeeper, but perhaps slightly disappointing for Chelsea, who paid £14m for him and then saw him have two really impressive seasons of development.
To make less than £10m profit (quite a lot less, when the cost of doing business, agent fees, wages and so on are considered) isn’t going to do much for us.
Still, the gentleman’s agreement was in place with him that he could go for that much, and we wish him all the best. It’s a nice move for him, replacing Kepa Arrizabalaga in Andoni Iraola’s impressive side.
Just a couple of months ago, as Chelsea secured a Champions League place and won the Conference League, the hope (and in many cases the expectation) was that Petrovic would return from his exceptional season on loan at Strasbourg and compete to be our number one next season.
We all thought he would go to the Club World Cup and show Enzo Maresca what he could do there. But from the moment he was left out of the squad for that tournament, it was clear that his days at the club were numbered.
Good luck, Djordje!
