Borussia Dortmund have officially confirmed central defender Niklas Süle’s injury diagnosis. The calf injury the 29-year-old sustained in yesterday’s friendly against Juventus Turin will keep the 49-times-capped German international sidelined for two months. Süle looks set to miss at least seven Bundesliga fixtures.
Süle’s club teammate Nico Schlotterbeck is also expected to remain out until October. BVB squad captain Emré Can – who often fills in at centre-back – is struggling with adductor problems and has been ruled out of Dortmund’s opening round Pokal fixture against Rot-Weiß Essen in seven days’ time.
Dortmund head coach Niko Kovac currently maintains only experienced one natural centre-back on his squad: Waldemar Anton. Right-back Yan Couto filled in for Süle yesterday. Kovac may have to call upon some of the youngsters from the BVB reserves.
Youngster Yannik Lührs (21) struggled in a league encounter against Leverkusen last January. None of the other BVB II players – including current permanent member of the Dortmund senior team Filippo Mané have made an appearance at the top level yet.
