Borussia Dortmund have announced that they have completed the signing of midfielder Jobe Bellingham from Sunderland.

The fee for the 19-year-old is said to be around €38m, according to The Athletic, which die Schwarzgelben are paying an upfront fee of €30m. Jobe signs a contract until 2030.

Jobe will play for Dortmund at the upcoming Club World Cup, instead of going with England to the under-21 EUROS in Slovakia. At the tournament, Jobe will wear number 77, and if Giovanni Reyna is sold, he will then be given the number seven, according to Sky Germany.

On bringing the 19-year-old to the club, sporting director Sebastian Kehl said:

“We’ve known Jobe for several years, and of course we have followed his progress very closely. He has taken another huge step forward in his development over the last year, and even at the age of 19 he has become a real leader. His commanding presence in central midfield is remarkable, and he will improve our team in various systems. We’re delighted that we were able to complete this deal before the FIFA Club World Cup so that we can see Jobe in our colours for the first time in the USA. He’s fit as a fiddle and raring to go – he’s determined to forge his own path at Borussia Dortmund and make his mark on how we play, and we’re confident that he will do exactly that.”

Jobe is the second Bellingham to play for Dortmund after his brother Jude moved from Birmingham to the Bundesliga back in 2020. During his time in the Revier, Jude became one of the best young players in the world before moving on to Real Madrid in 2023. The older Bellingham was unable to come away with a Bundesliga title.

Despite reports stating that Jobe does not want to be compared with his brother, following a similar path to him will likely garner comparisons.

This is Dortmund’s first transfer of the window, and they are still looking at securing Carney Chukwuemeka for the Club World Cup before he returns to Chelsea. Today is the final day of the special transfer window for clubs to register new signings for the tournament that starts later this week.
