Antoine Griezmann (34) has extended his contract at Atlético de Madrid, the Colcheneros have announced. The 34-year-old World Cup winner with France has put pen to paper over a one-year contract extension. Griezmann, Atlético Madrid’s record goalscorer with 197 goals, is now tied with Diego Simeone’s Colchoneros until 2027. The former France international joined Atlético Madrid from Real Sociedad in 2014. He then signed for Barcelona in 2019 after the Culers paid his €120m release clause.
Still, he would only spend two seasons in Catalunya before rejoining Atlético, initially on loan, before his loan was made permanent in 2022. Despite his longevity, Griezmann’s titles record with Atlético remains slim. He won the 2014 Spanish Super Cup and the UEFA Europa League and Super Cup in 2018. L’Equipe reported that Griezmann wants to use the momentum of his convincing season with the Colchoneros – 16 goals and nine assists in 53 games played – to help Atlético win a major trophy.
Atlético Madrid finished third in La Liga standings and pushed Barcelona and Real Madrid in a title charge that eventually wilted in the final months of the season. Diego Simeone can still bring silverware this season at the Metropolitano, given the Colchoneros will feature in the revamped Club World Cup. The La Liga side will face Champions League winners PSG, Seattle Sounders and Botafogo in the group stage.
