NYCFC vs Toronto FC: How to watch, time, and more of the lone July home game

This story tends to repeat itself multiple times throughout the season.  New York City FC has once again failed to win a game they should have won on paper, for they lost last weekend to CF Montréal.  The Pigeons struggled to find the back of the net and were too lackluster in the final third.  Their inability to be consistent continues to plague them, and it is hard to know when they will shine or when they will fail.

Now, NYCFC will play their lone home match of July at Yankee Stadium.  The team will face Toronto FC, a team that has struggled over the last few seasons.  Currently, the Reds sit in 13th place and have 11 fewer points compared to the Bronx team.  Their roster depth is also thin, and the team just mutually terminated the contracts of Italian stars Federico Bernardeschi and Lorenzo Insigne.  Their tenures, especially Insigne’s, did not go according to plan.  Plus, it did not seem like they were happy at Toronto FC.

Still, NYCFC is not consistent, and any lineup can beat them.  The good news is that the Pigeons won the opposite fixture and have recently been very successful against the Canadian side.  They have won the last five matches in all competitions and six in the last eight.

It will also help that Alonso Martínez is back with the squad after he and Costa Rica were knocked out of the CONCACAF Gold Cup by Matt Freese and the USMNT.  The striker has done well with the national team and will ideally continue to score.  Last weekend reminded everyone that NYCFC still struggles to find their scoring boots despite their previous win against Atlanta United FC.  Martínez can help the team during periods of struggle.
