Manchester United’s transfer chiefs are actively scouring the market for at least two goalkeepers to provide backup to Andre Onana.

In turn, the club are preparing to offload the out-of-favour Altay Bayindir, whose recent lacklustre showing likely determined the end of his days at Old Trafford.

Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg initially took to Twitter/X at the beginning of December to divulge United’s ‘expectation’ to sell the Turkish international this month. Today, he followed up his report, adding: “Now confirmed: Manchester United are looking for a new number two and number three”.

Bayindir made just his fourth appearance for the Reds when he was given the nod by Ruben Amorim for last month’s Carabao Cup quarter-final. He went on to concede four goals across the action-packed tie, including a goal directly from a corner courtesy of Son Heung-min. His previous outings included wins over Leicester City (5-2), Barnsley (7-0) and Newport County (4-2).

Now, you’d expect the 26-year-old has played his final match in United colours, and it remains to be seen where he’ll look to ply his trade next. In his senior career, he has only represented teams from his native country; Ankaragucu and Fenerbahce, the latter of whom accepted a £4.3 million bid to sanction the shot-stopper’s sale in September 2023.

Bayindir has earned 10 international caps but is unlikely to add more to his tally unless he seals increased game time elsewhere.

In hindsight, United were foolish to let go of goalkeeping prospect Matej Kovar. The then-23-year-old moved to Bayer Leverkusen last year despite enjoying a stellar campaign on loan with Sparta Prague, where he was crowned a league champion upon the culmination of the season.

He never made his senior debut for United, yet he has already accumulated 24 appearances for the reigning Bundesliga winners.
