Dan Burn has been presented with the Freedom of Northumberland.
The Big Lad From Blyth presented with the honour at a special ceremony at County Hall in Morpeth.
An official release (see below) from Northumberland County Council explaining why the award had been made.
What a story Dan Burn has experienced these past three years and four months.
After a long and varied career throughout the divisions, returning to Newcastle United shortly before turning 30, having not made it at NUFC as a kid.
What has followed…quite astonishing.
Northumberland County Council official announcement – 30 May 2025:
‘Newcastle United’s cup hero Dan Burn has been granted the freedom of his native Northumberland.
The honour was presented to Dan at a special ceremony at County Hall in Morpeth, where the defender was gifted an ornate scroll bearing his name and making him part of a select group of people to be awarded the Freedom of Northumberland.
Born and bred in Blyth, Dan’s role within the club stretches beyond that of a key player for both Newcasle United and more recently England.
He is making a real difference through the Newcastle United’s community and grassroots work. Passionate about helping others, he has taken on the role of player ambassador for the Newcastle United Foundation.
Earlier this year the County Council convened an extraordinary meeting to confirm the honour – with councillors voting unanimously to back the plan.
Council Leader Councillor Glen Sanderson, who originally nominated Dan for the honour, said: “Dan Burn is not only someone with a proud Blyth history – he is a very good man and also a hero to many for what he has achieved on and off the pitch – a real Northumberland legend.
“His footballing exploits are well-known to many sports fans and he’s played a key role in many of Newcastle United’s achievements over recent years. To cap it off with a well-deserved England call-up this year is quite incredible.
“We are so pleased Dan has been able to join us today for this very special honour for him and his family.”
Chairman of the County Council and Civic Head Councillor John Beynon said: “It was a pleasure to celebrate and show our appreciation to Dan Burn – not only because of his footballing achievements but also to thank him for the inspiration he has given to others across not only our beautiful county, but the region too.
